It can be daunting.
This will sound insane, but where you find one, there will usually be more. LGBT Meetings (takes a little longer, BUT, you also get seen off the bat as a supporter), gay bars, Drag shows (they happen in the most random of places), and occasionally fetish clubs.

Well, if you identify as trans, you meet people just like anybody else. If you're specifically seeking out transfolk, you may have a bit of a problem, as we are just a subset of the population with varied interests and activities. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the majority of transfolk are closeted and thus impossible to find even with the best intentions, but that is a discussion for another time.
There are some LGBT specific groups in any city of note, and you'll find transfolk on the outskirts of most social scenes. I would recommend exploring the kink, goth or punk scenes in your locale if the interests there match your own - these communities have particularly high numbers of visible transfolk due to their outsider natures.
The bar scene is a very targeted thing - you can go to a gay bar to find a gay man, you can go to a dyke bar to meet up with rough and tumble ladies, and you can go to a leather bar to meet interesting people... but none of these guarantee an encounter with transfolk, as we are often looked down upon even in those spaces, and we have none of our own.
Most transwomen don't identify as gay and thus will not be at a gay bar. You might run into some drag queens, crossdressers or transvestites I suppose.
I've met most of the transwomen I know through the kink scene and personal introductions. I've met most of the transmen I know through business and personal introductions. I wouldn't say I know any of the people I run into online, but even if you counted all the people who have frequented and posted on this site in the past year, I've met more transfolk offline in the past four. We aren't invisible, we are careful. We aren't going to stand out in a crowd, because many of us hide, and the rest are generally quite passable or quite well situated socially.
